LITERACY MATTERS

ALL THINGS LITERACY, BECAUSE LITERACY MATTERS IN ALL THINGS

Comprehension techniques are strategies that readers use in order to understand text. Activating prior knowledge, making predictions, questioning, visualising, summarising and implementing metacognition - thinking about thinking - can help in our quest to understand and remember what we read.

Fluent reading is necessary for comprehension and there are several strategies that all readers can implement in order to  improve fluency.  Reading with a high level of fluency involves reading with the same speed as speaking, phrasing / chunking words, employing appropriate expression and, of course, decoding with fluidity and accuracy.

To improve reading accuracy, read out-loud.

To improve speed, practice repeated reading.

To improve phrasing and expression, practice echo reading.

To recognise the benefits of these strategies, record reading.

With repetition and fluency growth, the ability to comprehend will continue to develop. In turn, reading confidence will improve and enjoyment and engagement with reading material will flourish.

Reading with fluency means the brain has time to focus on meaning.  We encourage engagement with reading material for all members of the household over the term break.
