St John Paul Day - What’s it all about?
St John Paul Day is one of the most important days on our College calendar - a day to celebrate the life, papacy, and legacy of our Patron Saint, Pope St John Paul II.
Did you know?
- The very first “John Paul Day” was celebrated way back in 1983 - the very same year our College first opened!
- At first it was held on 16 October, the exact date John Paul II was elected Pope.
- A number of years later, it was moved into Term 3 so that our Year 12 students could join in the celebration before graduation.
- In 2014, when John Paul II was canonised a saint, our school was renamed St John Paul College to honour him.
- From the very beginning, St John Paul Day has always started with a Mass or Liturgy focused on Pope John Paul II - his life and his teachings. This is followed by a full day of fun activities where students and staff can come together, celebrate as a community, and build connections.
St John Paul II had a deep love and respect for young people. He encouraged them to live with joy, courage, and faith - which is why celebrating together with fun activities is such an important part of the day. It reflects his belief that faith and joy go hand in hand, and that young people bring energy and hope to the Church.
