Leadership
Today we announced our student leadership team for 2021 (see below for the full list). It is always a time of excitement for both the staff and students as those who have been elected are announced to the community. The College Captains will be inducted at the Graduation ceremony, while the SRC and House captains will receive their badges at the first assembly back next term.
Student voice is very important in any successful school. It is vital that students are afforded the opportunity to contribute to the workings of the very place they spend most of their time. They must feel comfortable in making suggestions for the greater good and feel that at the very least, due consideration is given to their ideas.
In John’s gospel we are reminded of the importance of servant leadership and that no matter the position, the essence of leading is to serve those same people who you lead.
John (13: 2-6; 12-17)
Jesus and His disciples were at Supper. Jesus knew that the Father had given Him complete power; He knew that He had come from God and was going to God. So he rose from the table, took off his outer garment, and tied a towel around his waist. Then he poured some water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and dry them with the towel around his waist.
After Jesus had washed their feet, he put his outer garment back on, and returned to his place at the table. ‘Do you understand what I have just done for you?’ he asked. ‘You call me Teacher and Lord, and it is right that you do so, because that is what I am. I, your Lord and Teacher have just washed your feet.
You, then, should wash one another’s feet. I have set an example for you, so that you will do just what I have done for you. I am telling you the truth: no slave is greater than his master, and no messenger is greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know this truth, how happy you will be if you put it into practice!’

Father’s Day made me, as a father, to stop and reflect on the changing image of a father. We are living in a society where there is a greater prevalence of stepfathers, single fathers and grandfathers raising our young people. This may result in an entirely different dynamic in a family unit.
In many situations we can also see some fathers far more involved in the day to day running of the household and family.
In days gone by, money-making used to be the key focus of dads but now, they are becoming multi-talented just like women who take care of the household work, office work and their children as well. Covid-19 has also meant that many fathers are presently working from home and possibly being more involved with their children.
Studies show that children who receive more affection and love from their fathers (or father figures) are less likely to develop behavioural issues in the future.

Sociologists say it's common for people to perceive that God is like the fatherly figures in their lives. If dad is caring, patient and concerned then children will believe God has those same characteristics. And the opposite holds true when a father is harsh, judgmental or absent. (Matthew Brown. 2013)
The last Parenting Ideas webinar aired on Wednesday 9/9/20 at 8:00pm. This webinar “Teaching People about Healthy Relationships” was an informative and well spent hour. Parents are reminded to use the voucher code HEALTHY at the checkout to avoid paying the $37 viewing fee. The recorded webinars are available until December 2020.
The CSO have shared a Parent Online Safety Resource. In a time when students can be exposed to more and more questionable material, parents need to stay as up to date as possible. Please take the time to see how secure your practices are.

The Power of Collaborative Learning
Learning with other students can be a very powerful way to improve your learning outcomes. You might be sitting next to each other discussing what you are learning, or working together in a group online and sharing your screens, or giving a friend feedback about an assignment. There are many benefits to learning to work with other students.
MOTIVATION:
Studying together can be much more motivating than studying on your own. Setting targets and working towards them together can help keep you focused on completing assignments. Often study done together is more active and engaging than studying on your own and this is much better for retention.
DEEPEN UNDERSTANDING:
Discussing with a friend, being able to bounce ideas off each other, ask each other questions – all of these activities will help strength your neural networks and deepen your understanding of what you are learning. This can help to develop our higher order thinking skills.
DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES:
Sometimes we don’t realise that we are only looking at things in one particular way and there are different and diverse viewpoints to ours. Learning with a friend can help you see things in a different light and broaden your perspective. This can help develop our critical thinking skills.
BUILD TEAMWORK SKILLS:
Learning to cooperate, negotiate and problem solve with other people is a great skill to have in later life. By learning with other students you will have opportunities to learn to be a more active participant in group work and also develop communication and leadership skills.

Learning and Teaching
Prior to 2020, SJPC would ordinarily host a faith formation event SHINE for several hundred Year 9 and Year 10 Youth Ministry students from across the diocese. For obvious reasons, this gathering will not be going ahead this year. Fortunately, the Catholic Schools Office has produced an exciting program for each individual school to run their own, in-house version of SHINE.
This coming Tuesday, students from the 10F and 10G homerooms will take part in a full day program in the college hall.
We would appreciate your prayers for this important event.
Whilst the Covid world has resulted in all face to face experiences being cancelled, most providers have responded by creating virtual experiences, which, for parents and students living in regional NSW has been a real bonus, enabling us to access update date and relevant information regarding careers and courses without having to travel to Sydney, Brisbane or Melbourne.

Charles Sturt and the NSW Police Force are hosting a free information session for students who are interested in a career in the NSW Police Force.
As you may know, Charles Sturt University partners with the NSW Police Force to deliver training opportunities that enable prospective police officers to be eligible to join the academy.
On Tuesday 22 September at 7pm - 8.30pm, the free Zoom webinar will discuss everything students need to know - including what Charles Sturt courses students need to complete and the training program at the NSW Police Academy. Students will also have the opportunity to ask questions and to hear from Police Officers who have actually gone through the recruitment experience.

Our Year 12 VET Hospitality classes have worked diligently over their two years of study to complete a range of competencies for the Certificate II in Hospitality Kitchen Operations.
Students have studied many aspects of the Hospitality Industry including Safe Work Practices, Working Effectively with Others, Preparing and Serving Espresso Coffee, and Prepare Dishes Using Basic Methods of Cookery.
As part of their course the students have prepared and produced a wide variety of dishes, as well as participated in a range of functions to showcase their skills. They have catered for the Year 12 Graduation Mass in 2019, and served the staff delicious food for the Biggest Morning Tea in both 2019 and 2020, helping to raise money for The Cancer Council. They also hosted the Volunteers Christmas Luncheon at the end of 2019, serving an amazing three course menu to invited guests. The students have run Short Order cafes, served endless cups of delicious coffee, and wowed the staff with their tasty creations.
VET Hospitality is a dual accredited course, where the students have the opportunity to sit their HSC exam as well as gain a Certificate II in Hospitality Kitchen Operations. We have had a number of students complete all required competencies in order to attain their Cert II which will certainly place them in an excellent position with job applications for next year.
Both classes have been a delight to teach, and we wish all the students well in the next stage of their lives.
The photos below are a showcase of some of the amazing dishes they have prepared over their time in the commercial kitchen at SJPC.
Year 10 - Food Product Development
This term Year 10 Food Technology classes have been studying the area of Food Product Development. Students have had the opportunity to trial new products on the market, as well as learn about the processes undertaken in developing new ideas.
The main focus of the unit is for the students to design, develop and produce their own unique Boutique Cookie product. Market analysis and recipe adaption lead the students towards their new taste sensation, which they then produce during class time. Original packaging is also designed and made by the students to compliment their new biscuit design and find a ‘point of difference’ within the market.
Both Year 10 classes worked diligently on this task and created many new very successful flavour combinations for the Boutique Biscuits.
These classes also were able to experiment with a trendy way to create a gift for Fathers Day. They placed their dry ingredients in a jar with instructions attached on how to make the biscuits. We hope the ‘Bickies in a Jar’ gifts were popular with our students Dads last weekend!
Year 12
It’s been a tough year full of twists and turns and the students have handled it with maturity and understanding. The knowledge that ‘When life gives you lemons, you make lemonade’ is what they’ve been tasked with for the past 8 months in particular.
Nevertheless, they’ve managed to stamp their mark on the College and are heading towards some successful results in exams or careers or whatever it may be that they are aiming for.
Year 12 fundraising has just about wrapped up their efforts in raising much needed funds to go towards their chosen charities. Charities that are struggling with the workload and demand that the current climate has increased upon them this year. The students have taken every opportunity they can to have helped Julie at OzHarvest, Anna from Pete’s Place and the work of Ruralaid, in running events and volunteering when possible.
Their last efforts were three Online Auctions that ran over the past three weeks. Year 12 would like to thank everyone that took part and congratulate the winners:

The upcoming week will see Year 12 enjoy their last lessons with their teachers and classmates, along with hosting the final College assembly on Wednesday, then they’ll also enjoy a relaxed picnic day of graduation practice, music, drama, and some games and activities this Friday. The final week of this term will see our school based Retreat on Monday and Tuesday before Graduation Day on Wednesday. Please join us on this day via the live video stream that will be sent out and advertised over the College information channels soon.

Please see a message from John Cocciola (CSO Dioccesan Sport Officer)
After consultation with Michele McDonald (Assistant Director at CSO) and the conveners of the Diocesan Waterpolo and Gymnastics, it has been decided that with nominations due late this term and early Term 4 for both events and in the best interests of students and teaching staff in regards their safety and welfare, to cancel both of these diocesan events. Present government restrictions, border closures e.g. Waterpolo relies on umpires coming from Queensland and health requirements taken into account, it was decided to cancel these two events. At this stage Diocesan Golf is still on the calendar, but will be reviewed early in Term 4.
Year 7 and 8 Sport starting Week 9
The following groups will change sports in Week 9:
8 McAuley Boys - Fishing (off-campus)
8 Kelly Boys - Basketball/Futsal (off-campus)
8 McAuley Girls - Fast 5 Netball (meet at the netball courts)
8 Kelly Girls - Yoga (meet at the sports storeshed)
Those moving to an off campus sports -
Meet in the bus bay half way through lunch. Hat and drink bottle need to be taken. If you are unable to do sport, you will need to bring a note to your sport teacher. You will still attend but will be unable to participate. Students who do not participate without a note will still attend sport and will complete theory work.
All other students not listed above will continue with their current sport.

11 September - Term 4 Year 9 & 10 permission and payment notes due to the College.
18 September - No changes to any sports for Term 4 Year 9 & 10 sports will be made after this date.

Planning is underway for the 2021 Ski Trip to Perisher Smiggins. It will take place in the winter school holidays next year from Saturday 26 June to Saturday 3 July 2021. It is available to students who will be in Year 11 and 12. The cost of the Ski Trip is still being determined but will be approximately $2200. All transport is via long distance coach, and the accommodation will be on snow at the family owned and operated ski in ski out Peer Gynt Lodge at Perisher.
The cost will include:
- Lift passes and daily lessons for 5 days for beginners and experienced Skiers and Snowboarders
- On snow Chalet accommodation for 5 nights – Sunday to Thursday at Peer Gynt Ski Lodge
- Breakfasts (x5) and dinners (x5)
- All transport
- Ski/Snowboard equipment hire including helmets, ski pants and ski jacket
- Entry pass to the National Park (6 days)
Once the planning has been finalised, an expression of interest meeting will be held in Term 4 to provide itineraries and permission notes.

Last week we recognised the importance of supporting all those who need our help with RUOK day? Christ has taught us that every life is special and that each and every one of us has been made in his own image. 2020 has been a challenging year for everyone and circumstances have made it even more important for us all to stay connected and, for those who are able, be willing to support those around us.
During Wednesday's pastoral lesson students and homeroom teachers discussed the importance of supporting each other and explaining where support can be found.
On Thursday, our college joined the rest of the Diocese in prayer for the members of our community who live with mental illness. The prayer has been put together by St Mary’s College, Casino and was shared with many schools in the diocese. As a college, each homeroom class engaged in a prayer that consisted of Christian Meditation and prayers of intention. We are very grateful for this diocesan initiative to help our community see the divine role that the Holy Spirit plays in our lives.
